What Is In Your Heart?
If you listen to your heart today, what would you hear?
Mine would probably be a mix of phrases.. “give up,” “don’t do that,” “go for it,” “it doesn’t hurt to try,” “i’m tired,” “you’re OK,” “it will soon be over,” “smile!” “don’t be scared to love,” and so on.
Our hearts contain an abstract – the good and the bad, the truth and the lies. Our hearts may be loud with noise at times. It may be half empty that you feel like barely breathing, or it may be so full that you’re bleeding love. Others think they have a pusong mamon (soft hearted) while others a pusong bato (heart of stone).
With many options surrounding us now, what kind of heart should we have?
The Bible is clear with the kind of heart that God desires.
“Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in His holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not trust an idol or swear by a false god.” Psalms 24:3-4
A pure heart, it says. Such a big call, isn’t it?
The dictionary defines purity as “freedom from contamination.” I believe it wasn’t a coincidence that Webster defined it this way. God made it happen so the world can clearly understand what it means to be pure.
Two words : Freedom. Contamination.
God called us to be pure at the point that He freed us and saved us from our sins. The truth is that we are helpless when it comes to transforming our hearts. Our great need is for someone who is perfect and without sin to make our hearts absolutely pure.
We are blessed because God is more than willing to do it for us..without a cost!
He put to death our sinful state when Jesus died on the cross and was raised again. His righteousness for our sin. Because of this, we can now enjoy a life geared towards purity. Now that’s absolute freedom!
Purity is a way of life and a way to Life. Having a Savior in your life means you are now free and called to live a life of purity. Not by our own strength, but by God’s amazing grace!
Now we can boldly pray,
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 5:10
So, what does it mean to live a life of purity?
Contamination – We Get Rid of It!
Many things in this world can make us happy. But not everything glorifies God.
A pure heart always asks, “will this show and spread God’s love?” and consider it above everything else.
You only live once! – everyone says, so we might as well live it for the One who gave us this life.
“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.” Colossians 3:5
To have a pure heart, then, means to honour God with our lives. In our decisions, in words and deeds, in our thoughts and intentions.
To pursue purity means to bravely say No to worldy desires that contaminate the heart and to faithfully say Yes to God’s will for us.
“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate list like the pagans, who do not know God.” 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5
Follow the Light
“How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.” Psalm 119:9
Shifting our focus from this world to the Author of Life brings our perspective from here to eternity. When we start reading the Bible and get to know Him more, we begin to see what God’s heart looks like and we get attracted to it. We get so engrossed by His Word and to His Being that we start to align our hearts to His.
Purity is a gift He gave us, and pursuing purity is our thanksgiving to Him.
We will always fall short. There are times when we’ll get tired. Sometimes we’ll even doubt if we can live up to it.
But don’t give up. The God of the universe won’t ever give up on you.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:2
